EPCC Presence at CAAEYC

EPCC Presenters Gus and Wilma Gold

Conference weekend is always exciting, and this year marked a comeback from Covid. There were many more attendees than in recent years, many new faces to CAAEYC. Workshops were busy, a buzz was in the air.

Friday night was Honor an Educator night complete with speeches and snacks. EPCC honored Veronica Hernandez, who has excelled in the field as a Literacy Specialist, Mentor to Lab Students and Teacher. At EPCC she has worked on the Workshop and Training Committee, monthly contributor to our Newsletter, Presenter, and Planning and Development Committee. She has been involved in OCEAYC in Orange County and works at the Orange County Peace Camp. A well-deserved honor.

Saturday Morning started with an early EPCC Workshop, Creating Classroom Culture Through Your Children’s Books and Stories, presented by Veronica Hernandez, Shirley Chen and Gaby Litsky.

At 8:00 AM There was a full house (100 people). The workshop presented why creating a word rich classroom culture was important, the role of books, how to make the most of reading them to create curiosity and invite children’s participation in discussion. The Workshop then moved on to what makes a “Good Book;” then discussed other ways to involve storytelling, singing, puppets and persona dolls. The finish was about ways to structure a classroom/school library, use of Book Bags for home and other community book resources.

Saturday afternoon Gus and Wilma Gold Presented a Workshop “Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Help! How do I Decide! Using the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.”

This workshop provided participants the opportunity to share the difficult decision that educators must make in providing quality care and education for children, by exploring the NAEYC Code of Ethical conduct and solving example problems. The problems focused on relationships and communication with families and between staff members. The activity was followed by discussion and reflection.
